Sam Warner could rightly be called "The Father of Talking Pictures". Of the four Warner brothers, Sam was the most in favor of using synchronized sound with movies. He was the driving force behind the studio's partnership with Western Electric to create Vitaphone. At first, he only wanted to use Vitaphone to provide music and sound effects. (This was intended as a cost-saving device, allowing local theaters to dismiss their house musicians.) When Don Juan (1926) -- the first Vitaphone feature -- debuted, it was not nearly as well received as two of the Vitaphone shorts that immediately preceded it. One was of MPPDA president Will Hays giving a short introductory speech, the other was of an opera tenor singing a selection from "Il Pagliacci." Realizing that people wanted to hear movie actors' voices, Sam pushed his brothers to the next level: talkies. The result was The Jazz Singer (1927). Originally, Al Jolson was only supposed to sing. There was to be no dialogue. Jolson insisted on ad-libbing between songs. Sam convinced his brothers to include the ad-libbed scenes and, in fact, it is those few talking scenes that made the movie the sensation it was. Ironically, Sam never saw the revolution he started. He died the day before The Jazz Singer (1927) had its world debut in New York City.- Director

Jewish actor Joseph Green came from Poland in 1924 to New York, and went in 1927 to Hollywood. He popularized the Yiddish movie, showing the life at the Jewisch shtetl in Eastern Europe, in Poland and the USA before WWII. He retired from business after WW II. He died after long illnes on June 20, 1996.- Max Bozyk was born in Lodz (pronounced Wooj - but often Anglicized to sound like Ludz), Poland, in 1888, where he first performed in Yiddish theater and films. It was also there that he met his wife Reizl Bozyk, who accompanied him on stage as the second half of a comedy team. Touring in 1939 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he and his wife elected not to return to Poland after Hitler's invasion of their home country. Instead, they with their only daughter (their only son had remained in Poland and subsequently died in the holocaust) emigrated to the U.S. in 1941 and quickly established themselves as regulars in Yiddish productions on stage, as well as in Yiddish films. He was often likened to the French comedian [link-nm0272794] for his ability to evoke laughter and tears, almost simultaneously, and for the way in which he moved with subtle, abject gestures of the shoulders and head to enhance the comedic effect. His involvement with the Yiddish theater extended to a stint as president of the now-defunct Hebrew Actors Union, an organization for which he also served many years on the executive board. He was also a member of the Yiddish Theatrical Alliance and the Yiddish Artists & Friends. A performer to the last, he collapsed in his wife's arms after completing a monologue from the writings of Sholom Aleichem. Unable to revive him, he was pronounced dead at New York's Roosevelt Hospital.
